Aladdin is Coming to Disney+!! Poster Revealed!

Ainsley Melham in the Australian production of Aladdin

"Hail! Your attention I pray. Oh, ye people of Agrabah. THIS IS OUR LUCKY DAY!!"

Your wish is granted! The magic of Disney Theatrical's Aladdin is coming to Disney+ later this year!

Whilst we're still awaiting the official announcement from Disney, a sharp eyed fan found the poster for the upcoming musical event and shared it on Twitter:

When Aladdin closed in London's West End last year, Disney took advantage of having an empty theatre to create a very special recording. Bringing together an all star international cast under the guidance of original director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw, the show was fine tuned for film and recorded across five days before bringing in a live audience for a special recorded performance.

This truly was a once in a lifetime event, bringing together original cast members from Broadway, Australia, the West End and the US Tour to create a timeless version of the show. Headlined by the West End's Trevor Dion Nicholas as Genie and Australia's Ainsley Melham as Aladdin, the cast stars the US Tour's Isabelle McCalla as Princess Jasmine, Broadway's Jonathan Freeman and Don Darryl Rivera as the villainous Jafar and Iago, Broadway's Brian Gonzales as Babkak, Australia's Robert Tripolino as Omar, and Broadway's Brandon O'Neill as Kassim, along with the West End ensemble of Aladdin.

I was lucky enough to attend the filmed performance last August and it was truly magical. It was a little surreal to see cameras and film crew on the stage so I can't wait to see how the final movie looks. After Newsies and Hamilton I have high hopes that this is going to be something truly special. The cast was fantastic, it was incredible to see these cast members come together and getting the chance to see people I've not seen before in the roles. It really was a one of a kind production and I'm insanely excited for it to be shared with the world.

I actually wrote a piece on this film performance for Movie News Net last year after Disney confirmed that the filming had taken place (I'm so glad they did as not talking about it for a year would have driven me insane). Looking back now I can see I didn't do a similar piece for this blog. I have no idea why that is and I'm so sorry that I didn't.

Back then I speculated that the plan would be for the recording to be shown in cinemas first before coming to Disney+ like Newsies did. But, as with Hamilton, if that was the plan then the current pandemic changed things. Whilst we're still awaiting an official date, the poster does confirm that Aladdin: The Broadway Musical will be arriving this year. Honestly, I think this is coming at the perfect time. If ever we needed a little joy and theatrical magic, now is the time.

Stay safe everyone. Broadway will be back, and now we have a little theatrical magic to look forward to.

Remaining Aladdin Tour Dates Cancelled Due to COVID-19

Following Thursday's announcement that the Austin leg of the Aladdin tour was being postponed it has now been confirmed that both the San Antonio and Kansas City runs have also been postponed.

Whilst I cannot find the official announcement for the San Antonio postponement, San Antonio Theater's independent guide is listing the production as cancelled. For Kansas City, Broadway in KC has issued the following statement:

"Due to the growing concern over COVID-19, and out of an abundance of caution, Broadway in KC will be postponing all performances of Disney's Aladdin (April 15-26) until further notice.

PLEASE HOLD ON TO YOUR TICKETS AS WE WORK TO RESCHEDULE THIS ENGAGEMENT. We are navigating an unprecedented situation in real time, and ask for your patience as we work to bring Disney's Aladdin back to Kansas City as quickly as possible. We will be in touch as soon as possible with more information on the status of this event.

Thank you for your patience and your continued support. For updates, visit BroadwayInKC.com"

Whilst both Austin and Kansas City state that they are working to bring Aladdin back as quickly as possible it will most likely NOT be this current production. Reggie De Leon posted on Instagram that "the Aladdin tour unexpectedly played its last performance on Thursday … Love you all, and stay safe everyone!!!"

The first National Tour, which began in Chicago in 2017, was set to conclude it's three year run in Kansas City with a newly configured tour set to launch in fall next year. Best guess (and it is just a guess) is that when Aladdin comes to Austin and Kansas City it will be as part of this new tour.

Korie, Jonah, Kaena, Reggie, Jonathan, Jerald, Zach, Ben, Colt, and everyone involved in bringing this magical show to life these last three years, thank you so much. I'm so sorry it ended in this way, but the magic and joy you have brought to millions is priceless. If I know anything, it's that with Aladdin it's never truly goodbye so I hope to see you all in Agrabah again some day. Thank you for all the high adventures, I wish you all a magical future wherever your paths may lead.

Broadway Performances Suspended, Austin Tour Postphoned

From the official Facebook page;

"Under the direction of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and for the health and well-being of our theatregoers, cast and crew, Broadway performances of Aladdin have been suspended from March 12 to April 12. For Broadway ticket refund information, please visit aladdinthemusical.com"

The refund page advises that all affected tickets will be refunded at the original point of purchase. Please follow the link for further details.

The refund page also advised that the Austin, Texas engagement of the North American Tour has been postponed. The Texas Performing Arts site advises:

"In further response to the growing concerns over COVID-19 (coronavirus), The University of Texas at Austin has decided to postpone events at its largest campus venues, including Bass Concert Hall, for the immediate future. As result, Texas Performing Arts will postpone all remaining performances of Disney's Aladdin occurring the evenings of March 12 through March 22, 2020 following this decision.

If you are a ticket holder, please hold on to your tickets as we work to bring Disney's Aladdin back to Austin. We will be in touch in the next 7-14 days with more information on the status of this event.

We appreciate the leadership of university and public officials and will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves to ensure the health and well-being of our audience, staff, cast and crew before anything else.

When we are ale to resume performances, we look forward to welcoming you back into a clean and safe gathering space for our community to enjoy the shared experience of seeing stories unfold live on stage.

Thank you for your patience and continued support."

As an Aladdin fan I feel sad that Arielle Jacobs will now no longer get to play her final performance (scheduled for next weekend) and reunite with her original Aladdin, Ainsley Melham, one last time. And for those in Austin who, depending on how this develops, may not get to see the original tour. That said, this is unquestionably the right call as the safety of the cast, crew, and audience must always come first. Stay safe everyone, Agrabah will be back before you know it.

Salaam Worthy Friend - Michael James Scott Ends International Run... For Now!

Michael James Scott as Genie

On Sunday an Aladdin legend took his finale bow at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre.

Michael James Scott began his Agrabah journey as the original stand by Genie and Babkak when the show premiered in Toronto for it's pre-Broadway run in 2013. I was fortunate enough to see him playing Babkak the week the show opened on Broadway. After a year on Broadway, Michael left Aladdin and joined the original Broadway cast of Something Rotten, another musical comedy from Casey Nicholaw. But Agrabah was calling to him. In 2016 could finally call the lamp his own as he headed to the land down under to originate Genie for the Australian production where earned mid-show standing ovations and won a Helpmann Award for his performance (Australia's equivalent to a Tony).

Since then he's never looked back. From Australia to the US Tour, then to London (where I finally got to see him as Genie!), back to the US Tour, and, finally, back to Broadway. Not as a stand by, but as the only man who has headlined the show in every English speaking production around the world!

It's an achievement I don't think anyone else will ever match. Michael, Agrabah is going to miss you. Thanks for all the high adventures, all the magic, all the energy and passion you have given to this show for over 5 years. Enjoy your "well earned rest." And that EPIC cake!

But...

"Till another Arabian Night" is right. Agrabah keeps calling! And this time it's calling him home. Michael will return to Agrabah one more time next year as the US Tour hits his home state of Orlando.

"The pride, joy and fierce excitement of having the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring this iconic role, in a show I'm so proud to be a part of, back to the city where it all started for me feels like the biggest dream come true," Michael said in a press release, "I'm the product of Orlando, a city that is a big supporter of the arts and gives young artists the tools and opportunities needed to pursue their dreams. So many people have helped me, and my family, make this dream a reality. I can't believe I have the chance to come back home to show my beautiful city their return on investment."

Despite appearing on stages around the world, this will be Michael's first professional appearance on an Orlando stage. Even though he's officially finished as Genie, playing the role in his home town is a "gift" from Disney Theatrical he told the Orlando Sentinel.

Aladdin, with Michael granting his final wishes as Genie, will play at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts from January 22nd to February 9th, 2020. Tickets are on sale now.

Aladdin's US Tour is currently playing in Charlotte, North Carolina until this Sunday, next stop is Durham, North Carolina.

Tonight, Aladdin's US Tour welcomes a new street rat and a new Genie as Jonah Ho'okano joins the cast as our new Aladdin and Korie Lee Blossey takes on the phenomenal cosmic role of Genie as the show opens in North Carolina!

To celebrate, Disney Theatrical have released new production images featuring Jonah and Korie along with their incredible castmates;

For Jonah this is his Agrabah debut, whilst Korie has been with the US Tour from the start as Standby Genie and Sultan. I saw Korie a Sultan in LA and he was fantastic, I'm sure he'll be a truly magical Genie. They join a cast featuring Kaenaonalani Kekoa as Jasmine, Patrick R. Brown as Jafar, Reggie de Leon as Iago, Jerald Vincent as Sultan, Zach Bencal as Babkak, Ben Chavez as Omar, and Colt Prattes as Kassim.

Aladdin opens at the Belk Theater tonight and runs through to September 29th. Tickets are available here.

Make some magic everyone!

New and Returning Cast Announced for Aladdin on Broadway and on Tour

Clinton Greenspan as Aladdin, Photo by Deen Van Meer

Clinton Greenspan has headlined the US Tour of Aladdin since taking over the title role from Adam Jacobs last April. Now, he's taking Prince Ali to New York and making his Broadway debut as Broadway's new Aladdin, taking over the role from Jacob Dickey on September 13th.

And Clinton's not the only one making the trip from Tour to Broadway. After playing the Genie in every English speaking production around the world, Michael James Scott will take his final bow at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Sunday, September 22nd, bringing his historic run to a close. And on September 23rd, Major Attaway will make his triumphant return to Broadway after spending the last seven months on the road.

Major Attaway as Genie

Of course, you can't have Aladdin without Aladdin and Genie! So the US Tour will be welcoming Jonah Ho'okano as Aladdin and Korie Lee Blossey as Genie when the Tour hits North Carolina on September 10th! Korie has been with the tour since the beginning as standby Genie and Sultan, we saw Korie as Sultan when the tour was in LA and he was fantastic so the lamp is in great hands.

Can't wait to see you all making magic!!

It's an Aladdin Australia Reunion! Broadway Cast Change Announced!

Ainsley Melham and Michael James Scott in the Australian production of Aladdin, Photo by Deen van Meer

Disney Theatrical announced yesterday that Ainsley Melham will be returning to Agrabah next month as he takes over the title role in Broadway's Aladdin from February 19th!

Ainsley, who originated the role in the Australian production back in 2016, will take over from current Aladdin Telly Leung, who announced last year that he would be taking his final bow at the New Amsterdam Theatre on February 17th.

Ainsley will be surrounded by familiar faces as he makes his Broadway debut, reuniting with his original Jasmine, Arielle Jacobs, and his original Genie.

That's right! Michael James Scott is returning to Broadway! Michael must hold the record for the number of productions he's starred in. After making his Aladdin debut as Broadway's Stand By Genie and Babkak, he went on to originate the role of Genie for Australia before taking over the US Tour, then heading to London for a little Genie Swap with Trevor Dion Nicholas, back to the US Tour, and now taking over the role on Broadway!

Michael will play a limited engagement on Broadway from February 15th through to September 15th whilst Major Attaway, Broadway's current Genie, takes the show on the road with the US Tour. Yep, it's another Genie Swap!

Mike Longo as Kassim in Aladdin's US Tour, Photo by ecdiiiphoto

Ainsley and Michael aren't the only guys returning to Agrabah! Mike Longo, who originated Kassim in the US Tour, will make his Aladdin Broadway debut on February 19th following the final bow of Steel Burkhardt, who has played Kassim since 2014!

It's going to be an exciting year in Agrabah! Congratulations and welcome (back) to Ainsley, Michael and Mike, and congratulations on fantastic runs to both Telly and Steel!

Genie Swap!

Trevor Dion Nicholas' lamp is all packed and ready to head back home to Pittsburgh this summer!

For a limited time only, the West End's original Genie is trading places with the US Tour's incredible Michael James Scott so that he can bring this iconic character to life in his home town.

Speaking about the move Trevor said, "My time here in the West End has been absolutely incredible so far, and I am beyond proud to call London my new home. Still, being presented with the chance to perform this phenomenal show as Genie in Pittsburg is something I cannot pass up.  In a city so close to where I grew up, having an audience full of family and friends, is another dream come true."

Michael James Scott, who's journey mirrors Trevor's from Broadway standby to leading an international production, is just as excited to be switching lamps! Saying "Playing this iconic role of Genie has taken me all over the world, something I never even dreamed of. My 'Genie Brother' Trevor Dion Nicholas has raved about his time in London, so to be a part of this awesome Genie swap and return to play the West End again is an enormous Genie-sized gift. I just can't wait!"

I just love that Disney Theatrical gives its cast members opportunities like this, allowing them to switch between productions so they can play their home towns. It's an amazing gift, not just to the actors but to their friends and families as well.

The US Tour of Disney's Aladdin is currently playing in Philadelphia, with stops in Boston and Buffalo this summer. Trevor will join the tour for it's runs in Pittsburgh from August 22nd - September 9th, Atlanta from September 12th - 23rd and New Orleans from September 26th - October 7th!

Michael James Scott is joining the West End production of Aladdin from August 17th - September 30th.

And here's the announcement from the Genie himself!

US audiences are in for an incredible treat when this home town superstar hits the stage of the Benedum Center later this year!  And I can't wait to finally see Michael James Scott as Genie!  He was sensational as Babkak when I saw him in the original Broadway production and I missed him in LA earlier this year, so I'm really excited to see what he brings to the role!

End of an Era! Adam Jacobs Says Salaam to Aladdin!

Adam Jacobs as Aladdin on Broadway's Opening Night, Photo by Walter McBride/Broadway World

So this is it.  After an incredible seven year run from Seattle to Broadway and beyond, Adam Jacobs bid farewell to Aladdin on Saturday as he and the cast brought their incredible run at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre to a close.

Adam has been with the show from the very beginning.  In fact, if you count the 2010 workshops then his seven year run becomes an eight year epic adventure as he saw both this character and this show from concept to stage.  This magical show simply wouldn't be the same without him.  It's a journey he shared with his Jasmine, Courtney Reed, who was also part of those early workshops, so it was only fitting that the original Aladdin and Jasmine were reunited on stage last month as Courtney finished her own Agrabah adventures.

After all the wishes that Adam has made come true with this show, it was only fitting that Adam was presented with his very own magic lamp as the cast and crew gathered to sing him happy trails after his final bow as Disney's heroic street rat.

I was blessed to be in the audience for Adam's final Broadway performance last year.  I honestly thought that would be the last time I saw him as Aladdin.  I will be forever grateful that fate intervened and I got to see him again last month.  I know I have said this before, but it truly has been a privilege and a joy to see Adam grow in this role over the last 4 years, and Adam I am so grateful for all your support over the years, it's appreciated more than I can say.

Adam, I wish you all the very best for your future, whatever lies in store, but for now I wish you "a well earned rest", you've earned it!  I hope our paths will cross again.  Whatever happens, you will always be a prince to me.

Salaam Worthy Friend! Reggie DeLeon Says Goodbye to Iago

Reggie De Leon as Iago

This Saturday saw Aladdin finish it's incredible Los Angeles run at the Hollywood Pantages, bringing to an end the tour's first year and, sadly, Reggie De Leon's run as Iago.

I was lucky enough to see Reggie as Iago last month and he was incredible in the role.  I loved his take on the character, as I am sure countless others have over the last year.

Reggie, I hope you've enjoyed your time in Agrabah!  Here's wishing you all the best for the future!

Clinton Greenspan is the US Tour's New Aladdin

Clinton Greenspan as Aladdin, Photo by Deen van Meer

It's a new city and a new star next month as the US Tour of Aladdin moves to Denver with Clinton Greenspan taking on the title role!

Clinton has been with the show and understudied as Aladdin since the tour began last year, now he will make the role his own as he brings everyone's favourite street rat to life.

Speaking with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Clinton said "Aladdin is a story for anyone and all people.  Families, students and adults come to see the show for a great time, and they all experience magic in their own ways.  But most of all, this is a story of love between Aladdin and Jasmine.  The show has these thrilling, magical and colourful elements to it that make it a perfect romantic evening for those with adult sensibilities.  Just know that you're going into something unbelievable."

Clinton won't be the only star in Denver as Jay Paranada and Jed Feder are also joining the cast as Aladdin moves to the mile high city.  They will star as Iago and Kassim respectively as Reggie De Leon and Mike Longo finish their runs in Los Angeles this weekend.

Welcome to Agrabah everyone!  Here's wishing you a magical run!

Aladdin opens at the Buell Theatre in Denver on April 7th and runs through April 28th.  Tickets are available now.

Adam Jacobs to take Final Bow in Los Angeles

Adam Jacobs as Aladdin, Photo by Matthew Murphy

This is it.  The end of an era.  After originating the title role in workshops and the Seattle Pilot production, leading the Broadway company for three years and the national tour for a year, Adam Jacobs will take his final bow as Aladdin this weekend.

It's been an incredible run and I am so grateful to have seen Adam bring my childhood hero to life on stage.  Every time I thought he couldn't get any better and he'd just prove me wrong the next time.  I can't wait to see where he goes next, because I know I don't want to miss it!

For now though, make sure you catch Aladdin at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre this week!  It's your last chance to see Broadway's original Aladdin bringing this Disney hero to life and it's going to be truly magical.

You'll Always be a Princess to Me

Courtney Reed as Jasmine, Photo by Angelo Soriano

Tonight, Courtney Reed will finish her EPIC eight year run as Broadway's original Princess Jasmine.  From the workshops to Seattle, from Toronto to Broadway, and finally to LA to reunite one last time with her original Aladdin.  Courtney has been with Aladdin since the beginning and has given so much to the show and to Jasmine.

I feel so lucky to have seen Courtney as Jasmine so many times over the last few years. To see her grow in the role and as an actress every time we went back to the show.  But more than that, I am so grateful to have gotten to know Courtney.  She is truly one of the most beautiful people you could ever hope to meet and an inspiration to so many.  Jane and I were both so happy that we were able to go to LA this week, to see Courtney as Jasmine one last time.  We're definitely going to miss seeing this incredible lady (and selfie Queen!) at stage door after the show.

Enjoy today Courtney, we truly hope you have the most magical final day and we're both so excited to see where you go next!  Wherever that is, know that we'll be supporting you and hopefully one day our paths will cross again.  You will always be a princess to us.

XOXO

Yes, Adam & Courtney are together again as Aladdin & Jasmine once more! And yes, this makes me insanely happy! I can't think if a better way for Courtney to end her run than with her original Aladdin :)

Aladdin Opens in Hollywood!

Michael James Scott as Genie, Photo by Michael James Scott

Tonight Aladdin opens in the one place that might have more glitz and glamour than Agrabah - Hollywood!  Finishing the first year of its US Tour in style, Aladdin is making the Hollywood Pantages Theatre its home from now until 31st March.

Did someone say reunion?!  Fresh from his incredible run as Genie in Australia, Michael James Scott is back in the US and back in blue as he takes on the role once again for the Tour's Hollywood run!  And, of course, Courtney Reed, is playing her final weeks as Jasmine on tour with her original Aladdin, Adam Jacobs, from 13th January to 18th February (I still can't put in to words how happy I am that these two will be back together for her final shows!)

Whilst Courtney is in LA, Isabelle McCalla will be making her Broadway debut as Jasmine!!!  Congratulations Isabelle!!

The Tour has been on fire so far and this Hollywood run promises to simply magical!  So make sure you don't miss out and get your tickets now.

Courtney Reed to Fly Beyond These Palace Walls in 2018

Courtney Reed as Jasmine, Photo by Angelo Soriano
To paraphrase the Sultan, "I always knew this day would come. Now I'm afraid that it has come all too soon."

Aladdin is saying goodbye to an original cast member next month as Courtney Reed will play her final Broadway performance on Wednesday January 10th.

But just because Broadway is saying goodbye to Courtney next month doesn't mean she's saying goodbye to Jasmine just yet as she's heading to LA to spend her final weeks with Jasmine on tour with her original Aladdin!!

Adam Jacobs & Courtney Reed, Photo by Disney
Yes, Adam and Courtney will be reunited on the magic carpet one last time as she joins the touring cast in Los Angeles for her final month from January 13th - February 18th!

Courtney and Adam have played these iconic characters with each other since the early work shops in 2010 right through to earlier this year when Adam left the Broadway cast to headline the National Tour so as heart broken as I am to see Courtney leaving the show, I'm overjoyed to learn that she'll be spending her final weeks as Jasmine with Adam on the tour.  It just feels right that she ends her run with him after all these years.

But that's not all!  Joining Adam and Courtney in LA will be none other than Michael James Scott!  Fresh off his incredible run as Australia's Genie, Michael is all set to join his original co-stars as Genie!  Talk about a reunion!  Michael will be with the tour for the entire Los Angeles run from 10th January through 31st March.

Whilst Courtney is reuniting with Adam in Los Angeles, Isabelle McCalla will be making her Broadway debut as Jasmine from 17th January through to 18th February before returning to the National Tour.

Courtney, I wish you all the very best for your final months as Jasmine.  I hope you've loved playing her as I have seeing you bring her to life.  I can't wait to see what the future holds for you as you fly beyond these palace walls.

Adam Jacobs is Back!

Adam Jacobs as Aladdin, Photo by Matthew Murphy

I can't think of many posts that have made me as happy (and relieved) as this!  Adam Jacobs is back as Aladdin in Chicago!

Judging by social media I'm a little late posting this, I was hoping for some sort of official confirmation first (there's still no Aladdin listed on the official site's tour cast) and didn't want to post prematurely.

Then this happened;

Broadway in Chicago held an outdoor concert on Monday and there's Adam and Isabelle McCalla sounding fantastic singing "A Whole New World" so I think it's safe to say he's back!  And I'm overjoyed!

Welcome back Adam!  I think I speak for all the fans when I say we're so happy you're well again and back on stage where you belong.
