This week London's West End roared back into life with a celebration of musical theatre. Trevor Dion Nicholas (Aladdin, Hamilton) and host of West End stars come together with performances from almost every production in the West End for The Show Must Go On! Live at the Palace Theatre.

Trevor will be performing a number from Hamilton in a performance that you can only see here. Disney Theatrical will be performing numbers from The Lion King and Mary Poppins. There will be performances from legendary West End musicals such as Les Miserables, new sensations like Six, and West End premieres from Back to the Future.

A Broadway Princess Party in London!

Make way! Here they come! Ring bells! Bang the drums! The Broadway Princess Party is coming to London! Oh, I've waited a long time for this. And it looks like I'm not the only one as these three princesses crashed Club 11's website this morning when tickets went on sale!

Yes, Broadway's original Jasmine is returning to the West End next year as Courtney Reed, Laura Osnes (Broadway's original Cinderella), Susan Egan (Broadway's original Belle and Hercules' Meg), and their Fairy Godfairy Benjamin Rauhala (musical director extraordinaire and king of medleys) are finally bringing their incredible Broadway Princess Party to London.

On Friday May 15th and Saturday May 16th next year, Broadway royalty will take over the Leicester Square Theatre for a concert filled with music and magic. This will be a party like no other, so make sure you head to Club 11 and get your tickets now.

I wonder who the guest prince will be? Here's hoping for a Matt and Courtney reunion!

Salaam Worthy Friend - Michael James Scott Ends International Run... For Now!

Michael James Scott as Genie

On Sunday an Aladdin legend took his finale bow at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre.

Michael James Scott began his Agrabah journey as the original stand by Genie and Babkak when the show premiered in Toronto for it's pre-Broadway run in 2013. I was fortunate enough to see him playing Babkak the week the show opened on Broadway. After a year on Broadway, Michael left Aladdin and joined the original Broadway cast of Something Rotten, another musical comedy from Casey Nicholaw. But Agrabah was calling to him. In 2016 could finally call the lamp his own as he headed to the land down under to originate Genie for the Australian production where earned mid-show standing ovations and won a Helpmann Award for his performance (Australia's equivalent to a Tony).

Since then he's never looked back. From Australia to the US Tour, then to London (where I finally got to see him as Genie!), back to the US Tour, and, finally, back to Broadway. Not as a stand by, but as the only man who has headlined the show in every English speaking production around the world!

It's an achievement I don't think anyone else will ever match. Michael, Agrabah is going to miss you. Thanks for all the high adventures, all the magic, all the energy and passion you have given to this show for over 5 years. Enjoy your "well earned rest." And that EPIC cake!

But...

"Till another Arabian Night" is right. Agrabah keeps calling! And this time it's calling him home. Michael will return to Agrabah one more time next year as the US Tour hits his home state of Orlando.

"The pride, joy and fierce excitement of having the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring this iconic role, in a show I'm so proud to be a part of, back to the city where it all started for me feels like the biggest dream come true," Michael said in a press release, "I'm the product of Orlando, a city that is a big supporter of the arts and gives young artists the tools and opportunities needed to pursue their dreams. So many people have helped me, and my family, make this dream a reality. I can't believe I have the chance to come back home to show my beautiful city their return on investment."

Despite appearing on stages around the world, this will be Michael's first professional appearance on an Orlando stage. Even though he's officially finished as Genie, playing the role in his home town is a "gift" from Disney Theatrical he told the Orlando Sentinel.

Aladdin, with Michael granting his final wishes as Genie, will play at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts from January 22nd to February 9th, 2020. Tickets are on sale now.

Aladdin's US Tour is currently playing in Charlotte, North Carolina until this Sunday, next stop is Durham, North Carolina.

Final West End Wishes

So here we are. Tomorrow, Disney's Aladdin will take its final magic carpet ride in the West End. And what a carpet ride it has been. Even though we've known this was coming for almost a year, it's only really hit me this week. Preparing to see the show one last time and seeing the outpouring of love between the cast across social media, I'm reminded of just how special this show really is.

From first preview to closing night this has been an incredible journey. I won't say too much now. I know I'll have plenty to post after tomorrow's closing performance, but I just wanted to take a moment to reflect and be thankful for everything this show has given me over the years, the friends we have made, the experiences we've shared. It truly has been a wish come true.

If you count the shows in wishes then we have 3 left. 3 wishes. I can't help but think that's fitting. Part of me wishes I could freeze time tomorrow, keep the show just as it is. But part of the beauty of live theatre is that it exists in the moment. I'm so glad to have shared in this one. And now it's time to say goodbye, or salaam, enjoy the magic once more, and look to the future. Because for each and every talented performer on that stage the future is bright and I'm excited to see what it has in store.

And for Aladdin in the UK? I'm sure this isn't the last we've seen of our favourite street rat and his friends. It may be a while but I'm optimistic we'll see a tour or revival one day. It's too good not to. The show says it best; "Salaam worthy friend, come back soon, that's the end. Till another Arabian Night."

See the Sultan's Costume at The Royal Academy of Music

Celebrating 25 years of the Royal Academy of Music's Musical Theatre Program, What a Song and Dance is a brand new exhibition dedicated to musical theatre. From it's vaudeville and operetta roots to today's modern showstoppers, and even looking to the future of the art form in today's technological world.

The free exhibition in the RAM's ground floor museum plays host to programmes, set designs, and costumes from all eras of musical theatre and Aladdin's own Irvine Iqbal, an alum of RAM, is representing the show with his Sultan costume on display!

The exhibition opened earlier this summer and is running through to February 2020, so don't miss this opportunity to see musical theatre history, and one of Aladdin's exquisite costumes, up close and in person.

See Aladdin and More at Disney's West End Pop Up This Summer

If you've been near London's Covent Garden this summer then you've probably noticed that Disney's West End Summer Pop Up is back!

So come on down, come on in, and let the magic begin with Disney's current and upcoming West End productions.

Costumes from The Lion King line the entrance way, with Aladdin's magic lamp sitting proudly in the centre of the room as the show plays it's final summer in the West End. Next year Frozen will make it's West End debut and a special photo experience allows you to "Let It Go".

But if you grew up in the 90s then you'd be more rewarded to consider, this;

Yes! The original Sega game is free to play on these special arcade machines! And yes, I still totally suck at it.

The Pop Up is open seven days a week until Sunday, 1st September, and features live performances from the casts of The Lion King and Aladdin at 4pm on Thursdays and Fridays respectively (please note there is no Aladdin performance on Friday 30th August). You can find more details and a full schedule of activities at Disney on Stage. And yes, the bear in the Aladdin cast jacket can be bought at the Pop Up along with a Lion King version.

Next time I go, I will beat that game!!

Go Behind the Scenes of London's Aladdin

Have you ever wanted to go behind the scenes at the Prince Edward Theatre? With Aladdin ending it's West End run, the Evening Standard got the chance to go behind the scenes with Matthew Croke, Courtney Reed, and Trevor Dion Nicholas to show you how they make theatrical magic every night!

You can check out the video right here, where you'll see the stage, the wardrobe, the beads, the wigs, the bunker (specially made for Aladdin when the show arrived in London), and Matt's dressing room.

What about the magic carpet? Well, that one really is Disney magic and you'll have to see the show for that before it ends this weekend!

You can still get tickets from Disney Tickets!

Original Broadway Stars Reunite for Broadway in the West End

It's a Broadway cast reunion! Aladdin's original Broadway cast members Courtney Reed, Marisha Wallace, and Brandon O'Neill (!!) are joining together with Danny Becker, Greg Canestrari, Haley Catherine, Francesca Fenech, Ayanna Coleman Potempa, and more for the Broadway on the West End Benefit Cabaret!  It's a show hosted and created Johnson Brock and Brock Harris with all proceeds from the event going to MAD Trust, Industry Minds, and JDRF!

Courtney is, of course, Broadway's original Jasmine and is currently back on the magic carpet and bringing Disney royalty to life in the West End production until it closes next weekend. I've still not come to terms with the show closing here, but Courtney being here for that end fills me with joy.

Marisha is Aladdin's original Fortune Teller and Royal Attendant turned West End super star where she's currently starring in Waitress. And yes, that was totally her reprising her "Still I think he's rather tasty" line on the big screen in Aladdin!

And Brandon is the original Kassim! I guess that makes this his West End debut!

The special cabaret event takes place at the Pianoworks next Wednesday evening, August 21st, and right now you can get £30 tickets for just £10 using the code ALLAMERICAN at TicketSource!

This is going to be an amazing night, so don't miss out! If it wasn't in the middle of the week (or if I lived closer) I'd be there in heart beat! Have an amazing time everyone!

West End Live - One Last Time

Between Aladdin's 3rd anniversary last weekend and being back in London next weekend for Harry Potter I really shouldn't be going to London this weekend. But it's West End Live. It's Aladdin's last West End Live. So you can bet I'm going to be there to see and support this wonderful cast as they open up a magical weekend of music in Trafalgar Square tomorrow morning.

The free event starts at 11:00am with gates opening at 10:15am. You're going to want to be there early, the lines can get long ahead of opening and Matthew Croke, Trevor Dion Nicholas, Courtney Reed, and Agrabah's finest are the first to take the stage, starting the day with some of that incredible Disney magic they're all famous for.

You can find all the details, and the full line up for both days, at the official West End Live website.

Aladdin's time in London may be coming to a close, but I know these guys are going to make it an ending to remember. From an electric 3rd anniversary, to West End Live, to the final performance on 24th August, they are taking it home! You don't want to miss this.

Aladdin Celebrates 3 Magical Years in London

On Saturday Aladdin celebrated three magical years in London's West End. I want to say I was there on purpose, that I planned my trip for the anniversary, but the truth is I'd totally forgotten! I'd booked my tickets for Saturday's show because it was originally Courtney Reed's last night (it wasn't, so if you still haven't seen Broadway's original Jasmine you have at least two more weeks, so make sure you do!). It was pure, happy coincidence that her original end date lined up with the show's third anniversary and I am so, so happy that it did.

I'm not sure whether it was because it was the anniversary, or whether the new cast members (welcome!) have brought a new energy to the show but the atmosphere in the Prince Edward Theatre on Saturday night was positively electric. In fact, I would say it's one of the best performances I've ever seen of the show. Before we went I'd joked with Jane that I'd behave and save the standing ovation for the end of the show, but as I was sat watching Friend Like Me I knew I couldn't do that. Everyone on that stage was giving everything they had, they more than earned a standing ovation. Aladdin is always a joyous experience, but the energy coming off that stage this weekend just raised it another level.

One of the joys of having the show in London is getting to see it more, and being able to just watch what goes on in the background of the scenes. Seriously, next time you're at the show take a moment to watch the ensemble, as well as Babkak, Omar, and Kassim, as they react to the action. Watching the trio (when they're not the focus) is one of my favourite things and Leon, Julian, and Daniel never disappoint. And I have to say I love how much audiences embrace these characters in the show. Including deleted characters was always a risk, so it's incredible to see it pay off night after night.

Trevor was in incredible form, as always, keeping the audience, and Matt, in stitches. But it was even more hilarious to see Matt giving as good as he got! Matt and Trev play off each other so well, it makes the show funnier but also increases the emotional stakes as you can feel the friendship there. And Courtney continues to be the perfect Jasmine. The first time I saw Courtney in London last month I was nervous. Not about her performance, I knew she would knock it out of the park like she always does (and she did), but it was the first time I would see her with an Aladdin that wasn't Adam Jacobs. No matter how much I adore Matt as Aladdin, I was stupidly worried that it might seem weird seeing her on that magic carpet with someone else. Needless to say, it didn't. It felt natural. It felt right. And I love Courtney and Matt together in these roles, and they just get better every time I see them.

Irvine's Sultan remains a favourite, able to be the firm father figure, but always with a mischievous twinkle in his eye and excellent comic timing. Ivan De Freitas stepped in as Jafar (at what I'm assuming was fairly last minute as the cast board still said Fred Johanson), and he and Jermaine Woods (Iago) gave deliciously evil performances as the villains of the piece.

I've always said that the ensemble is make or break for Aladdin and they certainly made it on Saturday! Sheer joy radiated from that stage, making it all the more heartbreaking that it will all come to an end in 10 weeks time. If you still haven't seen it yet, or have been meaning to go again, now is the time. The show is the best it's ever been, full of magic, heart, and wonder, you can't help but leave with a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

The magical evening ended with Trev taking the stage and going live to the world on Instagram as audience members were given an exclusive 3rd anniversary poster. But that couldn't be all. After all, a Genie can grant three wishes! So out came the golden raffle machine filled with every seat number in the house. I still remember when Trev drew the first show lottery winners from this when the show first opened! Matt, Courtney, and Trev each drew one lucky winner to receive a bag of Disney swag, a special version of the anniversary poster signed by the cast, and a trip back stage to have their photo taken with the three stars! Now that's a wish!

The evening ended as Trev called forward a very special group of people. Those who had been with the cast from the beginning, who will have been making magic in Agrabah from when the show opened until when it closes later this year, for all the high adventures along the way.

Salaam worthy friends, we'll be back soon because it's not yet the end. And I'm not ready to say goodbye just yet.

A Broadway Princess in London

Saying goodbye is never easy, but if I've learnt anything these last few years it's that when someone says goodbye to Aladdin its never goodbye forever.

My heart is literally filled with joy to announce that Courtney Reed is making her West End debut as Princess Jasmine TONIGHT! That's right, our original princess is back in Agrabah for a limited run in London. West End you are not ready for this amazing woman. I wish we could be there tonight but we will be there very soon!

Gotta admit, it's going to be a little strange to see her play opposite anyone other than Adam Jacobs, but I'm really excited to see her Jasmine with Matt Croke's incredible Aladdin.

Courtney, we wish you an incredible West End debut tonight and can't wait to see you again. We're so excited!!!

Tonight is the night!

ITV is bringing the West End to the small screen as stars line up to sing some of your favourite show tunes with Aladdin's Trevor Dion Nicholas as one of the judges in All Star Musicals.

Yes, our very own Genie will be on the show, helping to decided whether each of the celebrity performances has musical magic, or if they should have stayed inside the lamp.

And that's not all! The incredible West End cast of Aladdin will be making magic themselves, with a show stopping performance of Friend Like Me that you won't want to miss!

All Star Musicals airs in the UK tonight at 6pm!

Matt Croke - Only Dreaming

Tomorrow's an exciting day for musical theatre fans as Matt Croke, the star of London's Aladdin, launches his debut album, Only Dreaming! Featuring songs from stage and screen, Only Dreaming will premiere on iTunes and Spotify tomorrow, with CDs available from the Prince Edward Theatre and Matt's website from 14th December.

Now, everyone reading this knows how big an Aladdin fan I am (obviously!), and Proud of Your Boy is my favourite song in the show so I'm delighted that Matt has recorded his own version of the song for the album! And not only that! He also duets with The Lion King's Nick Afoa (London's Simba) on a mash up of Proud of Your Boy/Endless Night! If you heard this on Radio 2's Friday Night is Music Night then you already know how amazing this sounds!

And Nick's not the only member of the Disney family Matt's teaming up with for this album. Trevor Dion Nicholas has Matt's back every night as the Genie to his Aladdin, and joins him for a new recording of Aladdin's Somebody's Got Your Back, whilst Hiba Elchikhe (Australia's Jasmine) joins him for A Whole New World. The album is also produced and orchestrated by Aladdin's West End musical director Alan Williams, so you know it's going to sound amazing!

As well as Aladdin, Matt's debut album features songs from Godspell, Singing in the Rain, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, and more. Disney's Tarzan makes a welcome appearance with Who Better Than Me? and Matt follows in the footsteps of fellow Disney Theatrical stars Adam Jacobs and Norm Lewis with his version of Go The Distance from Hercules. I can't wait to hear that one!

Congratulations Matt! I can't wait to pick up a copy next time I'm at the theatre! Or maybe I'll just download it! I really can't wait :o)

Aladdin London to Close Next Year

I can't find the right words for this. I was genuinely shocked this morning when I learnt that Aladdin will be closing in the West End next year, making way for a new production of Mary Poppins.

The first I knew about it was when I saw Facebook advert for Mary Poppins. My first thought was that it would be a limited run to tie into Mary Poppins Returns when that comes out this Christmas. A moment later I saw the date, 2019, and the theatre, the Prince Edward, and my heart sank.

Now, I want to say I am in no way wanting to take anything away from Mary Poppins. I'm happy for all the cast and creative team, and excited to see their new production when it opens. But Aladdin will always have my heart, and I am heart broken that the show is closing next year.

In the announcement of Mary Poppins' return it was confirmed that Aladdin will be granting it's final West End wishes on Saturday 31st August 2019.

I've saw the show on it's first West End preview, on opening night, and many more times since. But today's news really hit home that I haven't seen it anywhere near as much as I'd like to. I have just under a year to change that. And you can bet I'll be there on the last night too, even if they don't sell tickets and I have to sneak in through a skylight or something crazy, I'll be there.

You should be there to. Not necessarily closing night, but if you care about this show enough to read this blog, and you live in the UK, then you should go again (because I'm assuming most of you reading this will have already been at least once). We have one year left to experience the joy and magic of this show live on stage, and we should seize every chance we get to do so.

The silver lining is that the show's run hasn't really been cut short. Beauty and the Beast ran for 2 years in London, Mary Poppins' original run was just over 3 years. By the time it closes Aladdin will have also run just over 3 years. I'd need to double check the math but I believe Aladdin will have run just longer than Mary Poppins to be Disney Theatrical's second longest running show in the West End (and if you count the preview performances it definitely is).

And it's not closing mid-booking period. The show is currently booking through to February 9th, so there's at least one more booking extension to come, and the current cast contracts, based on the show's history, are likely to run through to June. Hopefully everyone will agree to extend for the show's final months, but it's nice to think that no one is having their existing contract cut short because of this.

So yeah, I'm trying to be positive. And on that positive note, both Beauty and the Beast and Mary Poppins followed their West End runs with a UK National Tour. So maybe the show, like Genie, isn't going away, it's just hitting the road. I know both Matthew Croke (Aladdin) and Leon Craig (Babkak, Stand By Genie) are Northerners, so I'm wishing with all my might that they get to headline a national tour together and play to their home crowd. I've said before I'd love for Leon to do a UK tour as Genie, sure this wasn't how I pictured it happening but I'd still love for it to happen.

For now though, we still have a year left with this amazing show and this incredible cast in the West End. I intend to be there an often as I can to both show my support and just to take in the sheer magic and joy that this show brings.

It's not over yet, so keep making magic everyone.
